GPT-6 Astra: What It Ships, Pricing & Who Can Use It

What shipped under the Astra name

GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's frontier model for hard end-to-end work: coding, research, computer use, document creation, and long multi-step tasks. In ChatGPT Chat it surfaces as GPT-6 Pro (powered by Astra). The API model id is gpt-6-astra.

OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes still frame the launch carefully: access is rolling out to a limited set of organizations; Astra is not yet generally available; broader availability is planned over the coming days. Prefer that page for GA status — not a social post.

Who can use it — Help Center first

Verified on Help Center plan pages on September 23, 2026:

• Chat (as GPT-6 Pro): Pro $100, Pro $200, Business, and Enterprise. Enterprise still depends on workspace model-access permissions.
• Plus: Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex — not as the regular Chat GPT-6 Pro path described for Pro/Business/Enterprise.
• Enterprise / Edu: Astra is off by default at launch. Owners enable it per workspace or role. Early Model Access does not carry over. The two-week admin preview auto-on does not apply.
• Codex CLI: version 0.153.0 or newer; update the ChatGPT desktop app if the picker is empty.

Work and Codex draw from plan allowances. Pro $100 / Pro $200 and Business Premium seats can use their full existing Work/Codex allowance for Astra; Plus and Business Standard get limited Astra usage with optional credits afterward. Astra can burn that allowance faster than GPT-5.6 Sol.

What's underappreciated here: "available on the Help Center plan matrix" is not the same claim as "already in your picker today." Release notes still say limited orgs / not GA. Check the model picker on your seat.

OpenAI X claim — keep it separate

OpenAI's X account has posted that Astra is live for Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium in Work/Codex (plus API), with Plus/Business following over a few days. That is what the announcement account said. Do not collapse it with Help Center release-note language into a settled "all Pro users have it" product fact while release notes still say limited / not GA.

Model id gpt-6-astra: 1,050,000 context window, 128,000 max output tokens, April 30, 2026 knowledge cutoff. Text + image in, text out. reasoning.effort supports low, medium, high, xhigh, and max. Responses API tools include web search, file search, code interpreter, hosted shell, computer use, MCP, and tool search.

Prompts over 272K input tokens bill at 2x input/cache and 1.5x output for the full request. Batch and Flex are 50% of standard; Fast mode is 2x. ChatGPT subscription allowances are separate from this per-token table.

What to do this week

1. If you need Astra in production API work, price against gpt-6-astra at $10/$50 and watch the 272K long-context multiplier.
2. If you are on Pro/Business/Enterprise Chat, look for GPT-6 Pro in the picker — and on Enterprise, confirm an admin enabled Astra (off by default).
3. If you are on Plus, check Work and Codex, not regular Chat, and require Codex CLI >= 0.153.0.
4. Do not treat an OpenAI X "Pro is live" post as proof your seat has it while release notes still say limited / not GA.
