Overview

Grok is xAI's consumer chatbot at grok.com. As of the August 12, 2026 launch post, the current flagship model is Grok 4.6. SpaceXAI's models page says to use Grok 4.6 for chat and code, and lists Imagine Image 2.0 and Imagine Video 1.5 as the image and video models. There is no Grok 5 on that page.

The API id is grok-4.6. Documented text pricing is $2.00 input and $6.00 output per 1M tokens under 200k prompt tokens (500k context), stepping to $4.00 / $12.00 when the prompt is 200k or more. Cached input is $0.50 or $1.00 in those two bands. The August 12 post also names a fast variant at twice the list price. Knowledge cutoff on the models page is February 1, 2026. Real-time events on the API need web search or X search tools turned on.

Consumer plans on x.ai/pricing (verified August 17, 2026) are Free at $0, SuperGrok at $30/mo, SuperGrok Plus at $100/mo, and SuperGrok Heavy. Heavy is still $300/mo on x.ai/bot. Plus is the new mid-tier: the pricing page lists it as everything in SuperGrok, plus 1080p video, higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build, priority access at peak times, and early access to new features. The compare grid also names SuperGrok Lite; the Individual cards do not publish a Lite dollar amount. Teams are a separate track on x.ai/grok/business: Business is $30/month per user, Enterprise is sales-quoted. Paid subscribers share one weekly usage pool across products, per the June 2026 FAQ on docs.x.ai/grok/faq, with Extra Usage Credits sold on the web from $5 when the pool runs out.

Grok Build is the terminal coding agent, now defaulting to 4.6. Plus is the first plan whose published bullets call out higher Build usage. That is not the same as Build Mode, the in-chat website and app builder. xAI's July 28, 2026 post puts Build Mode in early beta for SuperGrok Heavy only on grok.com, iOS, and Android. Grok Bot remains a separate teammate product. x.ai/bot still gates Bot to SuperGrok Heavy, Cursor Ultra, and Cursor Premium Teams. SuperGrok and SuperGrok Plus do not include Bot or Build Mode.

Is Grok worth it?

Worth it for People who want Grok 4.6 in chat and need a clear map of Free, SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, Heavy, and the API.

You can test that on the free tier before paying anything. The recorded trade-offs are listed below, and any one of them can settle the question on its own.

The 8.7/10 AI Score is an editorial read of published capability, price and shipping pace. Nobody here has hands-on hours with Grok. How we verify.

Worth it if

The strengths recorded against this entry.

  • Current flagship is documented as Grok 4.6 with published API prices
  • SuperGrok Plus fills the old $30-to-$300 gap with a published $100 mid-tier
  • X search is a first-party tool, not a third-party plugin
  • Grok Build and Grok Bot give two other official places to use the same lab

Not worth it if

Any one of these blocks your use case.

  • Grok Bot and in-chat Build Mode are still Heavy (or top Cursor for Bot), not SuperGrok or SuperGrok Plus
  • API realtime answers require search tools; the raw model cutoff is February 1, 2026
  • Weekly usage is one shared pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice, and Build, so video or Build can spend the week quickly
  • Chat, Build, and Bot are three products with three access rules

What sets Grok apart

  • Current flagship is Grok 4.6, not a later unreleased number
  • SuperGrok Plus at $100/mo sits between SuperGrok and Heavy and is the first listed consumer plan for 1080p video
  • Native X search on the consumer app and, with tools enabled, on the API
  • Grok Build and Grok Bot are separate products, not chat toggles

Flagship model as of August 12, 2026. SpaceXAI's launch post focuses on long-running agents and visual or interactive first passes. Model id grok-4.6. 500k context on the API. SuperGrok's published bullets name Grok 4.6 explicitly.

SuperGrok Plus ($100/mo)

Listed on x.ai/pricing between SuperGrok and Heavy. Official bullets: 1080p videos, significantly higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build, priority access at peak times, and early access to new features. Everything in SuperGrok is included.

X search and DeepSearch

The Free card on x.ai/pricing lists real-time web and X search. The API docs say the raw model has no realtime knowledge unless you enable server-side web search or X search tools.

Imagine Image 2.0 and Video 1.5

Documented generation models on docs.x.ai. Image 2.0 is $0.04 per image; the quality-mode SKU is $0.05; Video 1.5 is $0.080 per second. SuperGrok includes image and video generation; Plus is the first consumer card that names 1080p video. These are not Imagine 3.0 or Video 2.0.

Separate agent products

Grok Build (x.ai/build) is the CLI coding agent. Build Mode is the in-chat site/app builder, Heavy-only in the July 28, 2026 early beta. Grok Bot (x.ai/bot) is the always-on teammate with its own cloud computer. Bot and Build Mode are not on SuperGrok or SuperGrok Plus.
