ChatGPT Finances Experian Soft Credit Check: What Shipped

U.S. Plus/Pro ChatGPT Finances can connect Experian for a soft-pull VantageScore 3.0. What OpenAI's Help Center says about setup, monthly updates, and what not to paste in chat.

ChatGPT can already talk you through a budget in the abstract. The new piece is that eligible U.S. Plus and Pro users can ground those answers in their Experian credit report — and OpenAI is clear that checking the score this way is a soft inquiry. That distinction matters more than the product screenshot.

According to the OpenAI Help Center Finances article, Finances is available in the U.S. to Plus and Pro users on web, iOS, and Android, with a gradual rollout. Eligible people can connect financial accounts through Plaid and credit report data through Experian. Those are separate connections: you can use either or both. You do not need a bank link to use the credit-score feature, and connecting Plaid does not automatically connect Experian.

That separation is the practical story. Bank sync is about cash flow, bills, subscriptions, net worth, and portfolio widgets. Experian is about the score, the factors behind it, and monthly report updates. Mixing those mental models is how people panic about “ChatGPT ran my credit” when the Help Center says the score check through this connection is a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score.

What actually shows up after you connect

OpenAI says the credit-score feature shows your Experian credit report and a VantageScore 3.0 credit score. The Help Center’s credit score disclosure describes VantageScore 3.0 as ranging from 300 to 850. You can select factors for more detail, or ask ChatGPT about reported accounts, balances, credit limits, utilization, payment history, and inquiries — with the caveat that available details may depend on what Experian shares.

Updates are monthly, not live. After you connect, your score and report update on that cadence. History builds as monthly updates arrive; you may only see a single score at first. Credit monitoring can flag important Experian report changes such as a new inquiry, account, or address. You can turn credit alerts off in notification settings without disconnecting Experian, and the score and report will still update monthly.

Balances on the report are not your bank app’s live balance. The Help Center notes that the credit report shows what your lender last reported to Experian. A payment can show up in a linked bank account before it appears on the report. When the two disagree, check the dates before you assume ChatGPT “got it wrong.”

How identity verification works — and what not to paste in chat

Connection flow, per OpenAI: ask ChatGPT to connect your credit score, or use the Finances home page option. Then complete Experian’s form to verify identity and authorize access. Enter personal information and verification codes in Experian’s form, not in the ChatGPT conversation. OpenAI’s service provider, Experian, collects that identity information; OpenAI receives connection status and the credit data you authorize Experian to share.

That line is the everyday-AI hygiene rule worth repeating. Do not paste a Social Security number, full legal identifiers, or one-time codes into the chat window because a prompt asked for them. The Help Center is explicit that those fields belong on Experian’s form. If verification fails, follow Experian’s flow or Experian support — ChatGPT cannot file a dispute, change your credit report, or freeze your credit for you.

Soft pull vs hard pull, in plain English

A soft inquiry is typically the kind of check you (or a product you authorize) run to review your own score without the same scoring impact as a lender’s hard pull when you apply for new credit. OpenAI states that checking your score through this Experian connection is a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score. That claim is about this Finances path as documented — not a guarantee about every other credit product, every lender workflow, or every score model you might see elsewhere.

Scores will still disagree across apps. ChatGPT shows VantageScore 3.0 based on your Experian report. Lenders may use a different scoring model, a different bureau, or a different report date. The Help Center even warns that VantageScore 3.0 may differ from other VantageScore versions, and that for some consumers the risk assessment can vary substantially from a lender’s score. Treat the number as one labeled view of risk, not a universal “credit grade.”

What ChatGPT can and cannot do with your money

Finances is framed as understanding and planning, not taking action. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, change retirement contributions, open or close financial accounts, or file taxes. It is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm. Responses are informational. You stay responsible for decisions.

That is the take I want people to keep: the useful upgrade is conversational context over your authorized data — “which card drives utilization,” “what factors moved this month,” “what should I understand before a mortgage application” — not outsourcing judgment to a chat. Pair the Experian widget with the Plaid spending widgets if you want cash-flow and credit in one dashboard, but remember they sync on different logics and different clocks.

Privacy knobs that actually matter

Bank accounts and credit reports disconnect separately. You can drop Experian without removing bank connections. When you disconnect Experian, Experian stops sharing scores and reports with ChatGPT, and OpenAI says it deletes the underlying Experian credit report data from OpenAI systems within 30 days. Disconnecting does not scrub past conversation history or financial memories; delete those separately if you want them gone. Disconnecting Experian from ChatGPT also does not change your credit file or other Experian services you use outside ChatGPT.

Plaid-side account data follows a similar 30-day deletion window when you disconnect Finances or remove a connected account, per the same Help Center article. Temporary chats are another control: OpenAI says temporary chats will not access connected financial accounts or use or create memories for personalization.

Training settings for Finances conversations follow the same model-training controls you set elsewhere in ChatGPT (Settings → Data controls). If you care about that switch for ordinary chats, check it again before you connect credit data.

Who this is for right now

Eligibility, as documented: U.S. Plus and Pro, web plus iOS and Android, rolling out gradually — some eligible users will not see it immediately. Free-tier availability is not what the Help Center describes for this Finances experience. I am not inventing a credit-score product fee here; OpenAI’s article frames the Experian connection inside Finances for those paid U.S. plans, without a separate public “Experian add-on price” in the Help Center text we verified for this post.

If you already use Credit Karma, Experian’s own apps, or a bank’s free FICO view, ChatGPT Finances is not a replacement score authority. It is a conversational layer over an Experian report and VantageScore 3.0, updated monthly, with soft-pull viewing as OpenAI documents it. Use it to ask better questions about factors you can influence — utilization, payment history, inquiries — then verify anything high-stakes against the report date and, when needed, a human adviser.

Bottom line: the soft-pull Experian path inside ChatGPT Finances is real, limited to U.S. Plus/Pro as OpenAI states, and useful when you treat it as labeled data plus explanation — not as a lender’s final word. Start from the Help Center Finances article, keep identity fields on Experian’s form, and disconnect when you are done experimenting.
