Overview
Grok Imagine Quality Mode is xAI's high-fidelity image setting — the tier you select when you want the better render rather than the cheap one. It launched in May 2026 on an Aurora-derived model trained on more than 300 million images previously generated by Grok users, with photorealism and in-image text rendering as the two things it was tuned to fix. Since 7 August 2026 the engine underneath the name has changed: Imagine Image 2.0 now powers Quality Mode, which adds object-level editing, multi-image compositing, background removal and smart resizing to what was previously a generate-only path.
The important correction for anyone who read an earlier writeup: this is no longer API-only. Quality Mode is exposed in the consumer Grok apps at grok.com/imagine, on mobile and inside X, where a free Grok account reaches it under unpublished rate limits and SuperGrok tiers raise them. What the API adds is programmatic access and per-request cost control — xAI ships it as its own model id, grok-imagine-image-quality, priced around $0.06 per image ($0.01 input + $0.05 output) against roughly $0.022 for the standard grok-imagine-image tier. Callers pick fidelity per request instead of per subscription, and the same API key covers Grok text models and grok-imagine-video-1.5.
Where it lands in 2026: text-in-image accuracy is still the reason to reach for it over a general-purpose generator, which matters for product mockups, ad creative, signage and UI comps. The awkward part is positional rather than technical. The mode name is now branding on top of Imagine Image 2.0, so a reader comparing the two is comparing a product to its own engine, and the free consumer path undercuts the paid one for anyone not automating. At $0.06 a render the quality tier costs roughly 2.7× xAI's own standard tier, which is a real decision on any pipeline generating at volume.

Is Grok Imagine Quality Mode worth it?
Worth it for Developers already on the xAI API who need marketing or e-commerce imagery with legible in-image text and want to pay per render instead of carrying a second image-generation subscription.
There is no free tier to test it on, so the plans above are the entry cost. The recorded trade-offs are listed below, and any one of them can settle the question on its own.
The 8.2/10 AI Score is an editorial read of published capability, price and shipping pace. Nobody here has hands-on hours with Grok Imagine Quality Mode. How we verify.
Worth it if
The strengths recorded against this entry.
- In-image text rendering is a genuine step above most general-purpose generators — usable for signage, packaging and UI mockups without a hand-off to a designer
- Free consumer path and paid API path reach the same tier, so you can evaluate output quality at zero cost before writing any integration
- Editing, compositing, background removal and reframing now happen inside the model, removing the usual bounce to a second tool after generation
- Distinct model ids for the quality and standard tiers let a pipeline choose cost per request rather than committing to one fidelity level
- Shares an API key and billing account with Grok text models and grok-imagine-video-1.5
Not worth it if
Any one of these blocks your use case.
- At ~$0.06 per image the quality tier costs roughly 2.7x xAI's own standard tier, which adds up fast on any high-volume pipeline
- The name is now branding over Imagine Image 2.0 rather than a separate model, so it is hard to evaluate as a standalone product
- No open weights or self-hosting — output, pricing and availability are entirely at xAI's discretion
- No independent benchmark comparisons against FLUX-class or Nano Banana-class editors, so quality claims rest on the vendor's own numbers
What sets Grok Imagine Quality Mode apart
- The same quality tier is reachable free in the Grok consumer apps and per-image in the API — most rivals gate their best tier behind a subscription only
- Ships as its own priced API model id (grok-imagine-image-quality, ~$0.06/image) next to a cheaper standard tier (~$0.022/image), so cost and fidelity are a per-request decision
- Trained on 300M+ images generated by real Grok users rather than only curated datasets
- One xAI key and billing account covers image, video (grok-imagine-video-1.5) and Grok text generation
Key features
Imagine Image 2.0 engine
Since 7 August 2026 Quality Mode runs on Imagine Image 2.0 rather than the original Aurora-derived model, so the same setting produces materially different output than it did at the May launch.
In-image text rendering
Renders logos, signs, labels and UI text with fewer misspellings and cleaner letterforms than most general-purpose generators — the single capability that most justifies choosing this tier for marketing and mockup work.
Edit instead of reroll
Object-level edits, multi-image compositing, background removal and aspect-ratio regeneration happen inside the same model, so fixing one element no longer means regenerating the whole composition or bouncing to a separate editor.
Per-request cost control
Shipped as a distinct API model id (grok-imagine-image-quality) alongside a cheaper standard tier, letting a pipeline spend ~$0.06 on hero images and ~$0.022 on filler within one integration.

| Imagine Image 2.0 | Social and marketing creatives who need one visual in three aspect ratios with the background cut and one object fixed, without paying for a generator plus a background remover plus a reframing tool. | Free with a Grok account; SuperGrok $30/mo, Heavy $300/mo; API ~$0.06/image | 9/10 |
